I had great fun transforming this room into a playful children’s bedroom. From the tennis-ball-green coloured wool Roman blinds with colourful pompom trims, to the strong pink fireplace with its original art nouveau swirling pattern and matching pink wool upholstered toy box which doubles up as a bench. The flowerpot lamp in pink was perfectly matched from my clients existing collection of super lamps, as was their old vintage reading chair which we reupholstered in pink & green retro pattern fabric - it was great to include a piece of their family history in this new scheme for storytelling sessions. Due to the low ceilings and limited natural light we went with a warm white paint colour, we brought warmth with textures and accent colours. I chose to run the blinds up to the ceiling to emphasise the ceiling shape and add a sense of height. It was such fun working with my client who embraced colour with a great sense of fun. A bespoke bedroom I designed for a beautiful Edwardian home with custom designed furniture and this handcrafted silk chandelier by Fortuny in Venice. As part of this completely bespoke scheme I also designed a window seat with storage below to utilise the large bay window, and added lush textured fabrics and soft tones for a relaxing atmosphere. The custom design headboard, in rich wood tones includes inset marble topped floating lockers and reading lights as well as softly glowing wall lights. Contemporary living in period grandeur. For this magnificent Edwardian house in Ballsbridge I created a subtly glamorous entrance hall with softened tones and custom-made furniture. I designed this bespoke mirror consisting of asymmetric semicircles with blue stained oak, and a lozenge shaped natural marble console table. We retained the impressive crystal chandelier and period features while modernising the ambiance by combining bright fresh tones with richly textured materials and mid-century elements to suit modern day living. A quick spin around Collins Barracks Museum to see a few of my aul favourites which I find very useful for inspiration when I start a new project. That pair of Connemara marble console tables are my absolute favourite in the entire collection (as I’m stone-mad 😆). And I always see something new that I’ve overlooked on previous visits such as the mother of pearl chest with its dinky drawers and details. Reflecting on our Enniskerry renovation which transformed a white-box new build into a dark and moody contemporary chic home. The pair of 2 metre high monochrome paintings by Debbie Chapman dominate the room creating a subdued atmosphere that’s reinforced with the dark cabinetry and dusky wall tones. Lush textured fabrics and a sumptuous bespoke design custom-made rug by @ceadogan_rugmakers adds warmth and glamour along with the linear art deco vibe crystal chandelier. A custom light sculpture nestled in the corner was designed and crafted by Shane Holland, creating wavy shadows that flows into Debbie’s seascape painting of the Skelligs. The flickering floating fire imbues a sense of homeliness to this sleek scheme. Yum! I had a vip sneak preview in Mullens yesterday in advance of next week’s auction. Joe showed me around and we were both drooling over the craftsmanship of this dresser. It’s in fantastic condition, no repairs needed - a simple wash down and it’d slot into any home. Yesterday’s lunch with the Lord Mayor in the RIAC, followed by 3 fantastic art exhibition launches. What a great day flitting around town. The legendary Robert Ballagh and his ‘Fuck the Begrudgers’ was phenomenal, with a huge turn-out, the place was jammers! The man himself was in great form, and the Gorry Gallery did a fantastic job of showcasing Ballaghs finest work. His Bloody Sunday painting got me, as did his Moore St 1916. Next it was to Mick O’Dea’s exhibition ‘What is the Stars?’, followed by Peter Monaghans latest exhibition in Gormley’s. Great craic bumping into my pal, artist Paul MacCormaic and Una Gildea, as well as the illustrious glam-queen Suzanne Macdougald of the Solomon Gallery. Dublins art scene was buzzing last night, long may it last. ‘Dark & Moody’ was the clients request. Dark, moody, sultry and luxurious is what they got. I designed the custom dark oak headboard with floating lockers and concealed lighting to the rear for ambient glow at bedtime. I then softened the bed with a lush gold and black fabric padded panel. Bedside wall-lights give a warm soft glow with secondary lighting in the form of reading lights that allow my client plenty of options to set the right mood. The dark petrol blue wall colour is offset by the steep sloped ceiling which pulls more crisp white area down into the room, creating a good balance. Sumptuous linens dress the bed which are topped off with deep wine velvet cushions. Sleek fuss-free cooking. In this new build home I removed the builders standard white shaker kitchen that had basic cupboards and a tiny island. My new design incorporated clever storage systems to make the most of the space with an improved workflow. I devised a huge new island which includes a large wine cooler, a Quooker tap (boiling, chilled and sparkling water), and a large seating area all kitted out with waterfall natural translucent quartzite stone counters that shimmer and glisten especially in sunlight. The custom cabinets were fully bespoke and painted ‘Off Black’ (Farrow & Ball) which is my go-to dark because it’s got blue-ish charcoal undertones making it less severe than solid black yet dark and moody enough to create a sleek scheme. Looking good from every angle! When designing this open plan living space I was mindful to ensure there was a good view no matter where you sit. Custom cabinetry and furniture were painted ‘Off-Black’ (F&B) to create continuity and harmony between each zone. For this scheme, due to the scale of the room with 3.6m high ceilings, every piece of furniture was custom made to be proportional and for comfort too as each client has their individual preferences on comfort, for example they may prefer a firmer sofa whereas I have super squishy sofas in my own home. A bespoke bedside cabinet & headboard I designed last year using wall lights instead of lamps. This is really practical in master bedrooms as cluttered nightstands don’t lend themselves to a peaceful sleep. If you tend to bring a glass of water to bed, opt for practical surfaces like I did here with Silestone tops (helps avoid coffee cup stains). Keep it simple and clean-line with a pool of light from a feature sconce. I often add an angled reading light too, depending on the clients preference. Friday Fun - here’s some colourful children’s rooms I designed last year featuring a climbing wall, a swing, and lots of pink (did I mention that I love pink?) Proving that playfulness can be stylish. My client wanted lots of personality and “no pastels”, so we ran riot with the colour combinations to create vibrant spaces and a cosy circular reading nook to one side of a bunk bed for unwinding with a book. A quick look back at a recent project where we added mid-century vibes and fun finishes to a grand Edwardian property in D4. Here you’ll see a custom console table topped with beautiful natural stone cut in a lozenge shape for soft rounded edges, and a custom asymmetrical mirror with fun lamps. We sanded the gorgeous herringbone floor and stained it to this rich dark brown tone. The guest loo features handmade retro style geometric tiles, which is entered via the mustard and black laundry room with crittal doors clad in reeded glass for privacy. Lighting was great fun in this home where we juxtaposed funky lamps with the feature crystal chandeliers that were inherited with the property. The mix works perfectly. When 13 of Ireland’s top interior designers got together for a trip it epitomised ‘co-opetition’ with women empowering women through an outpouring of support for each others businesses. There was tonnes of love, great food, singing, silliness and shoes (lots of shoes). Who knew that a trip to Cosentino’s HQ in Spain would forge such great bonds between businesswomen, inspiring collaborations and new business ideas. A tribe of strong successful women who have each others back in ‘co-opetition’ not competition. Admittedly there were also plenty of moments when it felt like we were in ‘Bridesmaids’ the sequel with NSFW memories to last a lifetime. Cosentino’s philosophy of ‘Meaningful Design’ extends further than what we create for our clients - we’ve formed meaningful bonds and friendships thanks to this trip. A privilege to visit the Department of Foreign Affairs in the magnificent Iveagh House. Previously owned by the Guinness family as their city pad for partying. The opulent ballroom is jaw dropping having scaled the decadently furnished grand staircase. Quick ‘before & after’ pics of this kitchen makeover we recently completed. We transformed it from classic to contemporary by simply; replacing traditional tiles with terrazzo, ornate detailing on the cabinetry was removed and replaced with oak slatted panels, tiled backsplash was replaced with a striking bookmatched stone, new paint scheme and simplified handle scheme in satin brass to reduce the busyness, and a new lighting scheme tops it all off. ‘Makeba’ fits perfectly to soundtrack these strong beautiful women. Just back from the framers is this collection from Irish artist Karen Hickey. I splurged on the frames with float mounting, double layered frames and I even specially commissioned lime green mount-slips to echo the colours within the two main pieces of art. For the more glamorous lady I step-layered her silver frame for some glitz and added an inner orange frame for fun. Topped them off with ‘museum’ glass to protect them and reduce reflections. Absolutely loving being surrounded by these gorgeous powerful women. I’ve loved the Makeba song for years and although it’s been overused this summer online, I just had to add it here as, if you know the story behind that song (Mama Africa), it adds even more meaning. A peek at the almost complete Ballsbridge project, here’s one of the lights that’s a piece of art in itself. Newtons apple is the concept behind this striking and clever design classic. This floor lamp casts interesting shadows through the disc diffuser that shines a pinhole beam up onto the suspended apple that dangles precariously from above. Even in daylight it’s a talking point and focal point for the room. I even spotted an interesting leafy shadow that fell through the nearby window. Delighted with the results of this kitchen remodel in our Enniskerry project. This new-build home in an exclusive development had a basic builders kitchen (see 'before' pic) which we replaced entirely with a sleek handle-free custom-made kitchen painted in Farrow & Ball 'Off-Black'. Our design features a much larger island than the original one to accomodate a wine cooler for entertaining. This new island was then framed with a double waterfall stone counter using a stunning natural quartzite from Cosentino which has translucent facets allowing light to create a glow within the stone, and sparkly stone elements adding depth and glamour. This natural beauty adds an enriched detailing to soften the luxurious black scheme. An added Quooker tap not only provides instant boiling water, but also chilled sparkling water and keeps the counters clear of clutter. Sleek task lighting over the island continues the black detailing, and the glitzy Art Deco style chandelier in the living room beyond with a luxurious bespoke handmade rug by Ceadogan reinforces the glamour of this decadent decor scheme. A luxury oasis for a restful night's sleep. For this client we added plush fabrics and bedding, along with statement lighting to elevate this bedroom, creating a sumptuously relaxing atmosphere. Our client wanted ‘dark and moody’ in this dramatically proportioned room with ceilings of almost 5 metres tall at the apex, so we went with a dark petrol blue wall colour and combined this with charcoal velvet drapes, a gold headboard and burgundy cushions. Debbie Chapman was commissioned to create a huge abstract canvas which incorporated the colours from the bed. Everything for this room was custom designed and bespoke to suit the scale of this room, and to reflect our clients style. Incredibly proud of this room I created for a very special home in Enniskerry. I worked with the best of Irish artists and artisans to create a truly bespoke scheme. Artist Debbie Chapman was commissioned to create 2 HUGE art pieces for this 12ft high room, and incorporated the clients glamorous & busy life from when he lived in New York, as well as his love of rugged Irish landscapes, as seen here with the Skelligs painting. Shane Holland was commissioned to create a bespoke light sculpture, again emphasising the height and linear lines of the overall design, which he softened with a flowing wave like piece which flows into the Skellings seascape. Ceadogan Rugs in Wexford were commissioned to create a bespoke rug for this huge room, and their in-house artist Jenny Maslen created a beautiful design with sweeping brushtrokes in a nod to the art on the walls. I designed all of the furniture as everything had to be custom made due to the scale of this room, and everything was made here in Ireland (during lockdowns, which was fun!).
